If you're older than seven and you know that song you probably hate it. But three to five-year-olds across the country would come running when they heard it on television and at the top of many of their wish lists was the 6-foot tall purple dinosaur that sang it.
It's 1992 and it's the year of Barney the Dinosaur. Barney's the creation of Cheryl Leach a mother who was dismayed at not being able to find entertaining interactive videos for her child.
She created the character in 1988 and Barney was later placed on public television as a tool for helping young children by engaging them in songs problem solving and physical activity. The response to the show and the level of its popularity grew to heights never contemplated.
Soon Barney dolls were under Christmas trees everywhere as were games, puzzles, and musical videotapes. Barney was everywhere and kids couldn't be happier. Barney's Magical Musical Adventure was released on home video in 1993.
You might not have liked it but Cheryl Leach's giant purple dinosaur made it to the top of a Christmas Wish List with a hug from me to you and taught children across the country that all you need is love.
